From 8th to 13th November, 2014, H.E. Sir Iakoba Taeia Italeli, Governor General of Tuvalu, was accompanied by his wife Madame Koling Italeli; Honorable Monise Tuivaka Laafai, Minister of Communication and Transport for Tuvalu; Ambassador Jason C. H. Wan from the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in Tuvalu; and other officers from the Government of Tuvalu on an official state visit to the R.O.C. (Taiwan). Tuvalu’s Ambassador to Taiwan, Minute Alapati Taupo, and his wife Madame Seleta Kapua Taupo joined the delegation over the course of their visit to Taiwan.
During their trip, Governor General Italeli and other distinguished guests from Tuvalu met with not only Dr. Ma Ying-jeou, the President of the Republic of China, and Ambassador David Y.L. Lin, Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, but also visited Tuvaluan students attending vocational training courses at Taichung’s Workforce Development Agency and the Tuvalu Tourism Booth at the 2014 Taipei International Travel Fair. The Governor General’s visit to Taiwan also entailed a whirlwind tour of the island, during which the visiting delegation from Tuvalu traveled to Yilan, Taichung, Keelung, and Taoyuan and paid special visits to the Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, the Speedtech Energy Company, and the TaiwanICDF.
The delegation’s trip to Taiwan also featured a visit to the Embassy of Tuvalu in the R.O.C. (Taiwan) at Tianmu’s Diplomatic Quarter and a presentation by artist Vincent J.F. Huang regarding artistic projects that can highlight Tuvalu’s environmental crises on an international scale.
