On the afternoon of 1st September, 2014, Ambassador Minute Alapati Taupo and Madame Seleta Kapua Taupo traveled to the Taichung-Changhua-Nantou Regional Branch of the Workforce Development Agency, Ministry of Labor to attend the Opening Ceremony for the first “Tuvalu Youth Technician Training Program.” The President of Overseas Chinese University, which will be assisting in the culinary portion of the training program, as well as officials from Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor and the Central Taiwan Office for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were also in attendance and welcomed the twelve Tuvaluan students who were granted admission to the program.
The “Tuvalu Youth Technician Training Program” is a three-month course initiated by the Government of Tuvalu and Taiwan’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Labor. Talented Tuvaluan candidates are awarded scholarships to study at the program and attend courses in culinary training, automobile and motorcycle repair, electrical maintenance, or handicraft production depending on their vocations and areas of interest. The program participants will also attend field trips and factory visits at Taiwanese enterprises relevant to their skill sets and have the further opportunity to engage in sightseeing tours of Taiwan.
